The Ghost of g20

Description

The g20 protest in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday the 18th of November this year was an eye opener for me. I ran with the huge mob of people, watched as bottles and flares flew, I was part of the action as it happened, thankfully with the shield of diplomacy that is an SLR camera. It was a day of firsts for me; running from riot police... seeing riot police for that matter! It showed for me the spin that the media, the television news puts on a protest which should have been peaceful had it not been for certain individuals provoking violence. As it was, the day was eventful and I left hungry and tired through a curtain of police, through which I was ushered before they closed in on stray protesters.
This shot happened half way through the day's proceedings, I estimate around three o clock in the afternoon. It came as a shock to me to see this mysterious covered figure hovering in the middle of a major intersection, closed as it was to normal traffic. The purple sheet hid something, that is clear. However, whether this person did this in protest or was merely somewhat insane I shall never know. To document, as I have with this and other photos, my introduction into the world of political protest and violence, is the motivation for this shot.

This was taken with a Canon AE-1 Program second or third hand, an Arab name etched in the base plate... and a 50mm S.S.C. f/1.4, presumably bought at the original time of purchase of the camera. I deliberately sought out a camera with this fast and sharp glass so that I could shoot it wide open if need be. The film I used on the day was the APX25 reincarnation now known as "Maco UP25". I'd admittedly not used the film before and saved it for this special occasion. It was indeed a bright Melbourne day and by that time of the afternoon I was shooting at f/2 for uncompromising sharpness and 125th of a second shutter to freeze the slow motion of the figure. This shutter was acceptable as I was stationary and the figure just waddled around slowly. I'm immensely happy with the tones that you get out of this film, even though it scans shockingly in my flatbed.. I can't wait to print some tomorrow in the darkroom. Developed in Rodinal at 1+25 for 7 minutes.
